"......Make Pakistan a place where all languages can attain equal status..." ----Maqsood Saqib (Lahore)

(Janab Maqsood Saqib sent this e-mail from Lahore .If you would like to comment or submit your views about this letter or issues raised, please do so.-----Likhari)

Dear all,
Mushir Anwer a Dawn columnist wrote a very controversial and biased column "Literary Round Up" titled "Urdu as Punjab’s mother tongue". I submitted this letter in response to that column right after its appearance. But I did not find it on the pages of Dawn to day. They seem hesitant (obviously, reasons are known and unknown to us. Here, we are sharing it with you. I would appreciate your comments.
With my best regards

**********

Punjabi is Punjab’s mother tongue

The recent buzz is; Punjabi is not the mother tongue of Punjab. We will soon be hearing that Urdu is the mother tongue of Japanese also. This hypothesis is formulated by Fateh Muhammad Malik and supported by Mushir Anwar in his "Literary Round up"(May 7). His irresistible need to inventiveness is riddled with severe lack of sense. This is indeed a horribly twisted concept.

It is no joke to replace the language of another origin with the language of another land. It only serves the all-powerful vested interests. Things are not the way they have been claimed

He writes, "Punjabi is an undeveloped form of Urdu". This should be written in history in golden words that the developed form of Punjabi (the mother language of the people of Punjab) got structured at and emerged from Fort William College at Calcutta in the hands of non- Punjabi munshies under the watchful eyes of our colonial masters. While, at the same time, people of Punjab were speaking the same undeveloped Punjabi language in their homes and doing their daily chores in their mother tongue ‘Punjabi’ and the poets of Punjab were still writing in Punjabi. (Nobody told Punjabis about it, they suddenly woke up to the fact that a language for them is being cooked up and evolved elsewhere).

The British troops had to undergo ferocious fights in Punjab because they had a wonderful gift for the people of Punjab- the developed form of Punjabi language and they had also this munshi class with them to teach the language. (Despite the fact, that we have been learning the developed form of Punjabi for one and half century, we, Punjabis are still grappling with the proper pronunciation and accent). When British got hold of Punjab, they tried to root out and propagated against Punjabi language through these munchies. Only victorious could mete out such a treatment to subjugate and humiliate the people of the land.
(Documents are on record)

If we see through the logic of Fateh Muhammad Malik and Mushir Anwar, all distinguished and finest poets of Punjabi language, from Baba Farid to Mian Muhammad Bukhsh are nothing because they have chosen to write in inferior and substandard language (in other words, they were inferior people because language and humans are inseparable).

It is to inform them that Urdu is the federal language of Pakistan. It can play a meaningful role by linking all of us, Sindhis, Punjabis, Bluchis and pathans in harmonious blend keeping intact our cultures and languages. In this way, it becomes the symbol of our national identity but one should refrain from allotting it the role of dictatorship. We had been the victims of that psyche of monolingual imperialism in recent past, in 1971. It would be wise to recognize those with malicious designs otherwise we will put our integrity in danger. Our personal interests should be subservient to the interest of our nation. The demand for the Punjabi language as a medium of instruction is as old as the birth of Pakistan and it is not a new thing for all of us. We should all endorse this demand, as the drop- out rate of school going children in Punjab is very high. One of the factors of this deplorable situation is that children are denied their basic human right to read and write in their mother language.

We should all strive to make Pakistan a place where all languages can attain equal status can flourish and grow without the danger of extinction. We hope the day would arrive soon when these languages will become the source of earning and status for their respective communities.

Maqsood Saqib, Chowk Ganga Ram, Lahore

Press Note

Descendent of Mughal Empire to apologize for Empire crimes on Sikhs.
Guru Nanak had bestowed the Empire to Babur: Confirm many historical sources.

This Sangat welcomes move of Begum Sultana widow of Mohd. Bedar Bakhat the decedent of last Mughal emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar to apologise at Golden Temple on Vaisakhi (April 14) for the excesses of Mughal Empire committed on Sikhs. It may be recalled that the descendents of Mughals are living a miserable life in Calcutta and elsewhere. A few years ago there was a news that one of the descendents was rickshaw puller of Calcutta.

Sikh history is replete with Mughal excesses on Sikh Gurus. The Fifth Nanak was executed by Emperor Jahangir for the alleged crime of supporting a rebel Prince Khusro. Ninth Nanak was executed by Emperor Aurangzeb for opposing forcible conversions. Two sons of Tenth Nanak were walled alive at Sarhind. There after the empire witnessed a Sikh rebellion which shook its foundation and in fact the empire was never the same thereafter. The Calcutta based news especially important as it goes a long way in redefining the Sikh-Muslim relations.

It is interesting to note that the Guru Nanak had blessed the founder of Mughals emperor Babur of the Empire of Hindustan. We find many reference of such a blessing in the the Sikh history sources like the Janam Sakhis(17th Century AD), Sau Sakhi(1734 AD) Panth Praksah (1841 AD) and interestingly this view is endorsed by an early seventeen century Non-Sikh Persian source namely Dabistan-i-Mazahib of Mohsin Fani (Zulfifkar Ardistani). It is a mystery of history why should Guru Nanak invite the Mughal for invasion on Lodhis. It may also be recalled that Guru was once an employee (Modi) of Daulat Khan Lodhi of Sultanpur who was a Governor of Ibrahim Lodhi the Delhi Emperor. Where ever the Sikh source mention of the blessing on Babur they also do not fail to mention of the consequences if the Mughal house ever attempts of exhibit disrespect to the Nanak's house.

The old Persian document sees many similarities between Nanak's faith and Islam.

This Sangat devoted to the free pilgrimage to the Sikh shrines in Pakistan is particularly happy at this development because it has been advocating that the prosperity of Muslims will only be lies in the restoration of sanctity of oldest Sikh shrine Kartarpur where lies the Islamic tomb of Guru Nanak.

Kartarpur is the place where Guru Nanak stayed for maximum amount of time of his life; 18 years and ultimately passed away on Sept. 22, 1539 AD. Muslims erected a tomb and the Hindus a smadh in his memory. Kartarpur is just 2 kms. from Indo-Pak border on the right bank of river Ravi in Pakistan territory. It has remained virtually abandoned for the past 56 years. Wild grass has been seen growing on its floors and so has wildness been witnessed in the international relations for half a century now. Otherwise the poorer nations they have been spending most of their budgets on arms and ammunition.

Pakistan in the year 1999 cut the grass and swept the pious floors of Kartarpur and so has happened a miracle of initiation of peace process
The Pakistan Government has offered that it is willing to grant a free corridor to the most important the universal shrine the Kartarpur where the three prominent religions of the area are represented by three memorials. Thus it is a golden opportunity for the humanity to come together. And very practical one also because the shrine is not far away from the border: just two kilometer.

This shrine is a universal point on earth which can't be confined to any country or nation. Even, Sir Ceril Radcliffe who drew boundary-line between India and Pakistan in 1947 could not divide Kartarpur. People know that as per June 3, 1947 declaration the whole of Gurdaspur distt. was given to Pakistan which meant that Kartarpur had gone deep in Pakistan territory. But the division didn't work and had to be revised. Radcliffe bisected Gurdaspur in such a way that Kartarpur was exactly on the borderline. This is an open miracle and the story of Kartarpur is full of miracles.

For your kind information on March 7 instant there concluded the Chola Sahib festivel at Dera Baba Nanak and the newspapers report that about 10 lakh people had had darshan from distance of this rare shrine.

Vaisakhi Greetings from Sikh Community and Youth Service (UK)

gurU goibMd isMG jI--(icqrkfr dI klpnf)

-afeI ivsfKI-

Vasakhi, the birthday of the Khalsa Sikh Order, comes around the time of spring. It coincides with the Christian festival of Easter and the Jewish Passover, both festivals celebrating spring, goodwill and new beginnings. Vasakhi, April 14 is a traditional seasonal Harvest festival of Punjab and is celebrated by farmers in Punjab and surrounding areas and Sikhs across the world. The harvesting of wheat is started at this time in Punjab and it is considered a harbinger of wealth and prosperity. It is important and celebrated by all Punjabi communities across the world, but in the Sikhs it has a special significance.

On this day the Khalsa Order was created by the Tenth Guru, Guru Gobind Singh Ji. He Baptised Five Beloved Ones - Panj Payaras - and  created  The Khalsa Sikh Order . He gave a distinct uniform to the Khalsa Sikh Order - uncut, untrimmed beard & Unshorn hair to be protected by a Turban and a blue bana (uniform), the 5 Kakkars or symbols necessary for the strength and unity of the Khalsa Sikh Order, and the 5 basic prayers.   Vasakhi stands for the Birth Anniversary of the Sikhs and Khalsa Sikh order. It is customary on this day for the Sikhs to assemble together in the Gurdwara to offer prayers.  On this day, blue and saffron colors have significance – these are the colors of the 2 Sikh flags with a Khanda (Khalsa symbol) in its center.

Why represent these publishers wrongly?------Surinderpal Virk

Respected Rai Sahib,

I don't understand how this comparison of prices in the magazines / newspapers by Ajit Singh is justified.

Mehram and AKS are published monthly.

While the price of an issue of Mehram ( for example)  is Rs. 10.00 and postage is Rs. 42.00, then the cost for 12 months should be  ( 10+42=52 X12= Rs. 624..00) which is roughly only $ 14.00.
Where did the writer  Mr. Ajit Singh London get the figure of Rs. 2704.00?

Why represent these publishers wrongly? That is why Indian magazines are not within the easy reach of normal Punjabi readers.
In fact these magazine publishers are ripping  off the foreign readers by charging high prices in Pounds / Dollars.
